Miguel’s Friday Thoughts

It’s Friday! It’s time for Miguel’s Friday Thoughts. Today, we remember two anniversaries that happen in sports on this date: Kobe 81-point performance against the Toronto Raptors and Giants defeating the 49ers in the NFC Championship Game.

It’s hard to believe that it has been 10 years since we witness one of the greatest performances in NBA history. Kobe Bryant in his prime was not easy to guard at all. Despite of struggling with the Lakers, Kobe did something that will forever be talked about. His 81-point performance is the second most points scored by a player. Wilt Chamberlain still holds the record with 100 points. Michael Jordan scored the most points in his NBA career with 69 points. The interesting thing about that is both Jordan and Kobe were 27 years old at the time of their remarkable performance. Kobe is in his final season, but it is a great honor to see him perform for all of these years and getting the chance to experience seeing him score 81 on my TV screen.

Four years ago today, the Giants took on the tough 49ers. It was the rematch of the 1991 NFC Championship game. As a Giants fan, I was extremely worried for the Giants. The 49ers defense were extremely good. Many people didn’t give a Giants much of a chance of knocking off the 49ers. Eli Manning took a lot of punishment against the 49ers defense. However, that wasn’t the end. Kyle Williams lost two fumbles returning punts, including one in overtime that preceded the game-winning field goal by Lawrence Tynes to send them to the Super Bowl. Tynes won the NFC Championship game for the Giants back in 2007 that send them to the Super Bowl, eventually winning it all. Giants took advantage on both fumbles by scoring a touchdown and field goal. They went on to win the Super Bowl again and beating the Patriots in the Super Bowl for the second time. Ever since the Super Bowl victory, the Giants haven’t been back to the playoffs. Hopefully, they could get some good players and start off fresh next season.
