The City College of New York men’s basketball team was defeated 82-63 by CSI on Tuesday evening in Nat Holman Gymnasium. The Beavers and Dolphins split their matchups this year, and CSI now has eight wins in their last nine games.
College of Staten Island (16-5, 9-3 CUNYAC) started the game with an 8-5 lead and continued to add to that lead for most of the first half. City (11-10, 6-7 CUNYAC) called a timeout with CSI leading 14-8. Right after the timeout the Beavers went on a huge 11-2 run that put them in the lead 19-16. Both teams battled back-and-forth the the first half as they searched the conference victory. The lead changed five times and the score was tied four times during the intense first half between the conference foes. City held a one-point lead as they entered the locker room 31-30.
City held onto the lead until 15:30 when CSI first tied the game at 38 and then took a 40-38 lead. The next couple of minutes contained a lot of back-and-forth action between the two teams, but CSI eventually took a big 51-46 lead. After that the Dolphins went on a 13-5 run to take a 13-point lead.
CCNY could not contain the Dolphins as they continued to run up the score. Staten Island outscored the Beavers 52-32 in the second half, which is the most points scored by an opponent in the second half this season. The Beavers fought a hard battle, but fell 82-63 to CSI. CSI shot .534% from the field. They outscored the Beavers 52-32 in the 2nd half.
CSI’s forward Will Fonseca led the team with 17 points. Hamer finished with a game-high 24 points, 12 of which came from free-throws. He dished out five assists in the loss. Hamer also led the team with seven rebounds.
City will play their final home game of the regular season on Saturday, February 6 against non-conference opponent USMMA. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m
