The City College of New York Women’s Basketball team trounces York College Cardinals, 80-30 to advance to the semifinals for the first time since they began hosting the CUNYAC tournament which began in 2007.
The Cardinals started the game on a 4-0, but the Beavers responded and held on to a lead that will never be erased. Cardinals offense became powerless and scoreless. Beavers capitalize on every turnover and put a lot of pressure on the Cardinals to pass the ball. Their half court pressure became very vital in this game. Beavers defense held the Cardinals to only 4 points in the first quarter.
Beavers continued to pound away in the second quarter. They kept making stops and absolute dominate on the fast break. Beavers scored 16-0 in points off turnovers. Cardinals tried to make a small comeback, but they had no chance against the Beavers defense. This is one of the reasons why they had the No. 4 seed and had a first round bye. Beavers lead the half, 35-12. Erika Richards led the lady Beavers with 14 points.
The Beavers came out strong as they always do in the third quarter. City continued to used the entire team as part of the victory. City outscored the Cardinals 24-12 in the third quarter. CCNY put up another big quarter as the minutes wound down in the fourth quarter. The team fought together to pull out a victory to push them into the semifinals. York only scored six points in the fourth quarter, while CCNY scored 21. City took the game to advance to the semifinals 80-30.
Beavers Tiara Brown finished with double doubles with 17 points, 10 boards. Erika Richards added 16. Robin Daley added 10 points, 9 boards. City forced York to commit a season-high 38 turnovers and tallied a season-high 19 steals.
The Beavers will face Lehman in the semifinals on Wednesday, February 24 at 6 p.m.
