For the first time since a 2013 loss to Floyd Mayweather at age 23, Alvarez came up short n a boxing match. WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol retained his title by defeating Saul “Canelo” Alvarez by unanimous decision.
It is the most stunning upset of the weekend and, indeed, the most surprising victory in boxing this year.
Bivol’s jab was on point throughout, and he consistently responded to any single punch landed by Alvarez with clean combinations in return.
Alvarez connected on just 17% of his punches against Bivol and was outlined by a margin of 152 to 84.
The possibility of a trilogy between GGG and Canelo is now in jeopardy.
