Driver Austin Dillon clinched a controversial victory at the 2024 Cook Out 400 at Richmond Raceway. In the race’s climax, Dillon won the last lap by bumping Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano, resulting in Logano’s car spinning around. This unexpected turn of events has sparked a heated debate among racing enthusiasts.
It’s a win that no one saw coming. Austin Dillon, who entered Sunday’s race 32nd in the standings, pulled off a stunning victory at the 2024 Cook Out 400. His unexpected triumph secured him a spot in the NASCAR Playoffs and propelled him to No. 13 on the Playoff Standings.
Hamlin and Logano were very upset about the race’s outcome. Both drivers tasted their own medicine because they had done this to other drivers. You can’t have your cake and eat it, too.
Hamlin went to his podcast, Actions Detrimental with Denny Hamlin, and shared his thoughts about Sunday’s event. The episode ran for over an hour, and he said many exciting things. One of the things he said on his podcast was, ” Why have a rule if you’re not going to enforce it?”
Hamlin believes that Dillon’s win is tainted because he had to hit two cars intentionally. He understands that Dillon has been struggling to earn victories, but there are better ways to do it.
Richard Childress’s Racing team was celebrating as if they had won the World Series, and they tried to downplay how Dillon had won the race. They don’t care as long as Dillon wins. Dillon feels good about the victory. When Kevin Harvick interviewed him, he told Kevin that his son had asked him or told him why he continued to lose. Dillon knew his son was right but didn’t want to hear it. Dillon knew this victory was vital to him, his family, and RCR. He wanted this badly. It’s a shame that the result had to be one that left a bitter taste in many people’s mouths.
Dillon has five wins and 78 top-ten finishes in his NASCAR Cup Series career. In addition, he has nine wins and 107 top-ten finishes in the NASCAR Xfinity Series career.
Many fans were upset because this was not NASCAR racing. People who took to social media said that this was one of the reasons why they stopped following NASCAR. Intentional car wrecking and bumping are not necessary in the sport. Hamlin stresses that NASCAR needs to take more action on this issue to set an example for the next generation of drivers. If this were a top racing series, then Dillon would have been disqualified, but because it’s the regular season, it’s a different result.
NASCAR has no choice but to blame itself for allowing this situation to continue. Would there be some retaliation for Dillon? It wouldn’t be a surprise. We must wait and see what happens next Sunday at the FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway.
