Grammarly announced on Tuesday that it is acquiring a productivity startup called CODA. CODA’s CEO and co-founder, Shishir Mehrotra, will also become Grammarly’s new CEO.

Although the acquisition is great for Grammarly, they must still compete with Apple and other big tech companies. The CEO is confident the company will put up a good fight and could hang on to those other big companies.

“I think Grammarly is the original AI agent,” Mehrotra said. About 40 million users use Grammarly every day. One of the key things about that agent is that it works alongside you. One of the big innovations Grammarly has worked on is that instead of forcing you to go to some other place, it follows you to every different surface, with 50,000 applications.”

Many companies that continue to expand decide to go IPO, meaning that everyone will know the product for the company to go public. Mehrotra wants his companies to be the talk of the town in the future and will work hard to get there.

“I think the goal is to build an enduring company,” Mehrotra said. “In this crazy world of AI changing everything we work on, there is a very small list of companies that can have that meaningful platform to be that future of AI. I think we can be at the forefront of the approach of Grammarly and now with CODA. We want to be one of those top three or four companies people think of when they think about the AI tools.”

Grammarly is trusted by over 70,000 teams and 30 million people, including BlackRock, Upwork, Expedia, Data Bricks, Atlassian, Salesforce, and Zoom.
