On Christmas Eve, American Airlines experienced a “technical issue” that caused travel disruptions and impacted holiday plans for many travelers around the United States.

American Airlines posted a tweet on X:

“We’re currently experiencing a technical issue with all American Airlines flights. Your safety is our utmost priority; once this is rectified, we’ll have you safely on your way to your destination.”

Captain Mike Coffield, CEO of KM Cargo INC, joined Fox Weather for an interview through Zoom and shared his thoughts about the complications that American Airlines went through and what could have caused this.

“What happened with American was kind of serious,” Coffield said. “They work with a secondary computer provider who gives them data for taking off and landing of aircraft, called weight and balance. When that information comes and the need of that information, it allows the airline and then the captain to compute the length of the runway required, whether the airplane is overweight or not, or not, based on the temperature and the conditions of the weather that day, whether an airplane can make a safe takeoff. Their computer system did not provide on Tuesday morning.”

According to Fox Weather, nearly 7.9 million people will take at least one domestic flight, and about 119 million will travel 50 or more miles from home.

Weather is always a major factor. Last-minute travelers must remember that snow and rain during the holiday season can slow down flights.

Sometimes, traveling during the holidays is not the best idea, but families understandably want to reunite and be together for the holidays.

Travelers could bring their headphones, a good book, movies, and snacks to keep themselves entertained while experiencing these delays. That’s something travelers should keep in mind for future reference.

As of today, the flights from American Airlines have resumed.
