Dreamworks Pictures has announced that Shrek 5 is heading to the theaters on Wednesday, June 30, 2027.
The original cast of Shrek, including Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy, will be back for the fifth installment. The three actors will reprise their voice roles of Shrek, Princess Fiona, and Donkey.
Many Shrek fans are unhappy with the delay. The original plan was for the animated feature to be released for December 2026, but now it’s been pushed for the start of Summer 2027. The waiting game can be brutal, but that’s how business works sometimes.
Zendaya is the newest addition to the cast. The actress will play Shrek’s daughter in the new movie. Zendaya has been on a mission in Hollywood lately. She’s done great work in the HBO series Euphoria, and she was also outstanding in the Tennis drama movie, Challengers, which many felt that she should’ve been nominated for a Golden Globe or Oscar.
It will be an intriguing dynamic to see Mike Myers and Zendaya work together in this new picture. The previous Shrek movie was Shrek Forever After, which came out in May 2010. Shrek Forever After received mixed reviews, but it did very well at the box office. The movie grossed over 756 million, making it the fifth highest-grossing film of 2010.
The fifth installment will elapse those numbers because it’s been 17 years in the making, it’s the same original cast with the addition of Zendaya, and it’s a Summer release. Walt Dorhn and Conrad Vernon will serve as co-directors. Michael McCullers wrote the script.
Dorhn has worked with Dreamworks since 2002. He’s also known for being an animator and voice actor. Vernon directed Shrek 2, Monsters vs Aliens, and Madagascar 3. McCullers has had success writing scripts for Baby Mama, the Austin Powers film series, and The Boss Baby films.
