The late, great Chris Farley passed away on December 18, 1997, but his legacy of laughter still lives on today. With his larger-than-life personality, Farley became a comedy icon, first on Saturday Night Live, and later in beloved films like Tommy Boy and Black Sheep.
It was only a matter of time before a biopic about his life was made. Recently, it was announced that Josh Gad will direct the film, with Paul Walter Hauser set to star as the unforgettable SNL alum.
Biopics often provide a deeper insight into the lives of the heroes we admire. Recently, we’ve seen a biopic about Paul Reubens’ Pee-wee Herman, and Ryan Reynolds is producing a biopic about John Candy. Now feels like the perfect time to revisit Farley’s story and share it with a new generation. Gad himself has called the project “ambitious,” noting that New Line Cinema has been supportive throughout the script and budget process.
The lives of comedians are often filled with both laughter and tragedy, Robin Williams being a poignant example. Biopics peel back the curtain, showing us not just the characters we loved on screen, but the people they truly were off-screen.
Chris Farley has always been someone who could instantly bring a smile to anyone he meets. We all still catch ourselves quoting the popular SNL line, “I live in a van down by the river!” to this day. We are eager to see how Gad and his team capture the spirit of a man who embodied pure joy, energy, and heart. Expect to see more of these films hitting theaters and streaming platforms. There are still so many incredible stories left to tell, stories of those who left us far too soon.
The film is currently in pre-production, with an expected release in early 2026.
