The North Carolina Tar Heels defeated the Georgetown Hoyas 81-61 in Chapel Hill on Sunday.
It was a classic rematch of the 1982 national championship game. Carolina had a throwback game, and fans wore vintage gear. Both teams are good this season, but Carolina was the better team.
Carolina dominated the second half by outscoring the Hoyas 37-22. They shot 48 percent from the field. Carolina shared the ball effectively and capitalized on second-chance points. Caleb Wilson led the Tar Heels with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Henri Veesaar had 18 points and 15 rebounds.
Derek Dixon finished the game with 14 points and three assists in 27 minutes. Dixon should continue to get more minutes. We understand that he’s a freshman, but he doesn’t look like one based on how he’s performing. He’s a fearless competitor.
The Tar Heels needed a divisive win over Georgetown to prove to the world they are the real deal, and they did. Carolina will look much stronger as a unit once Seth Trimble returns from injury.
“We’ve got to be physical and tough enough that it’s always all UNC,” Coach Davis said. “The physicality, even on the offensive end, to be able to set screens, come off screens, the patience to be able to take the bump, be able to score, get to the free throw line, knock down free throws, makes the extra pass. The last four games regarding St. Bonaventure, Michigan State, Kentucky, and now Georgetown. Very physical team, and I think it’s for us to learn lessons on what’s going to allow us to be successful.”
Carolisn improved to 8-1. Hoyas fall to 6-3.
Carolina will play USC Upstate on Saturday, December 13, at 2 pm ET.
