The Detroit Red Wings dominated and shut out the Vancouver Canucks 4-0 on Monday night in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Axel Sandin-Pellikka had two assists. Goalie John Gibson had one of the best performances of the season as he made 39 saves for the Red Wings. It’s Gibson’s first shutout of the season.

“I think we played pretty solid,” Sandin-Pellika told the media. “First period was a little back and forth. They got a lot of chances, but I still think we fought through it and we got our scoring chances, and we capitalized.”

Gibson refused to take all the credit. While speaking with the media after the game, he made sure his teammates did everything they could to help him earn the shutout.

“Anytime you get a shutout, it’s nice,” Gibson said. “It’s not just a solo effort. The guys did a good job in front of me. Forwards blocking shots. Defense was clearing out the rebounds and bodies in front of the net. So it was a team effort. Caught some big goals there in the second, kind of kept the momentum on our side, and shut it down there in the third.”

The 36-year-old James Van Riemsdyk scored the first goal for the Red Wings when he put it in on a backhand. The goal happens in the first period with less than six minutes to go. He’s been on a mission for Detroit. James has scored in all three games to open the Wings’ six-game road trip, part of a four-game scoring streak, and his sixth goal in seven games.

Dylan Larkin and Nate Danielson added goals for the team. Red Wings improve to 16-11-3 in the season.

The Red Wings continue their road trip as they face the Calgary Flames tomorrow at 8:30 pm.
