The Kansas City Chiefs have been eliminated from playoff contention for the first time since 2014. However, it’s a much more serious situation because the Chiefs lost quarterback Patrick Mahomes to a torn ACL during Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Mahomes was trying to find his teammate when he made the throw, and he landed awkwardly. The Chargers won 16-13 and swept the season series. Mahomes tweeted, expressing his frustration.

“Don’t know why this had to happen. And not going to lie, it hurts. But all we can do now is Trust in God and attack every single day over and over again. Thank you, Chiefs Kingdom, for always supporting me, and thank you to everyone who has reached out and sent prayers. I will be back stronger than ever.”

Tearing your ACL can take a full year to heal. The Chiefs won’t be competitive next season because Mahomes won’t be there. Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce is past his prime. There’s no guarantee that Kelce will be in a Chiefs uniform next season. Head coach Andy Reid is not a young coach. Therefore, how long can he keep this going?

In addition, the AFC improved significantly, especially the AFC West division. The Denver Broncos and the Chargers are getting better. The New England Patriots got better. We still can’t count out the Buffalo Bills. As excellent as the Chiefs have been for years, in 2025, teams no longer seem to fear them.

It’s the first time that Patrick Mahomes won’t be playing in January as a member of the Chiefs. It shows how great Mahomes and the Chiefs have been for many years. We never saw it coming. Now, we hope Mahomes doesn’t lose his elusiveness or his ability to scramble. It’s a serious left knee injury. This doesn’t take much of his athleticism away. Wishing Mahomes a speedy recovery.
