The Cincinnati Reds shut out the Miami Marlins 6-0 on Thursday. Reds starter Nick Lodolo had a sensational performance on the mound.

Lodolo pitched six strong innings, allowing just three hits and striking out four Marlins hitters. He had his best performance of the season. This is the caliber of performance the Reds need from him and the rest of the pitching staff.

The Reds can be a real playoff team if their offense can be more consistent. Their pitching rotation is their most significant asset, but they don’t need a bunch of superstars in their lineup to be an elite team. The Reds don’t need to copy so much from the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Spencer Steer had a good night. Steer hit a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning. Elly De La Cruz hit a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning. De La Cruz picked up his 100th hit of the season. He continues to be amazing and grow as a baseball player.

The Reds split the four-game series with the Marlins, 48-46. They will wrap up the first half of the season at home when they face the Colorado Rockies for a three-game weekend series.

The Reds are 24-5 when they connect two or more home runs in a game. Impressive, right? If that works for them, they should stick with that formula.

Chase Burns will pitch tonight against German Marquez. Burns is looking to earn his first win of the season.
