LIV Golf spent $300 million on Jon Rahm, $200 million on Phil Mickelson, and $125 million on Bryson DeChambeau. Now, according to court records, the company is filing for Chapter 11 protection in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court of New Jersey.

It’s a tough time for the company that tried to compete with the PGA Tour. For the last five years, they connected with other countries such as Saudi Arabia. In April, based on what LIV Golf stated, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund would no longer fund the breakaway circuit. The fund’s financing is $49.6 million.

LIV Golf had many liabilities working against it. The company had canceled an event in New Orleans and its season-ending event in Michigan. The company is planning to redeem itself in some ways. LIV intends to restructure itself “under a new and more efficient operating model,” something it has taken to calling ‘LIV 2.0.’

CEO Scott O’Neill wrote a letter to fans about the financial obligations and their next step for a brighter future.

“Now it is time to enter the next phase of LIV Golf,” CEO Scott O’Neil said in a letter to fans. “Today, we took an important step forward to get there. LIV Golf has entered a court-supervised restructuring process that provides us with the time and framework to address previous financial obligations and complete a transaction that will make the League’s next phase a reality. Put simply, this process is designed to build a stronger and more sustainable future for LIV Golf.”

O’Neill seems optimistic about the future of LIV Golf. What’s going to be the next plan for the top players who represent LIV? Will they stay loyal and continue to believe in the brand? Are they going to pivot? Brooks Koepka went back to the PGA Tour this year after being a member of LIV Golf. Koepka is owed $1.7 million.

LIV will have to pay players a lot of money. According to the court papers, the company has massive debts totaling between $500 million and $1 billion to between 1,000 and 5,000 creditors.
