Padraig Harrington’s Bold PGA Tour Critique

By Miguel Mike Medina

Golfer Padraig Harrington doesn’t shy away from speaking his mind and doesn’t always agree with specific rules or opinions.

In his interview with Golf Channel, his body language tells you from the beginning that he doesn’t like the idea of the PGA Tour’s proposed changes to field sizes, reducing the number of fully exempt players.

“Just terrible,” Harrington said. “It is. I can’t think how bad it is. Taking away – at the end of the day, the people vote to keep the thing tighter and closer. Why don’t we have 12 people in the event, and everybody else can go home?”

Harrington continues to express how the PGA Tour can solve its problems.

“The tour was running just fine,” Harrington said. “I know there’s a little pressure on time to finish fields at certain times of the season. Players will handle that. They’re prepared to – they know at the start of the year, I might miss out on a few tournaments because of the light, and we’re always talking. The only way to solve this whole play issue is – the slow play issue, like driving in rush hour traffic. Too many people are on the golf course, and the tee times are too tight. Yes, this is one way of solving one of the big issues in golf, the pace of play.”

At the end of the interview, Jokingly, Harrington said that he would start a campaign saying, “Bring back Monday qualifying,”

Harrington is a 3-time winner on PGA Tour champions this season. He sits in 4th in Charles Schwab standings.
