Oilers Struggle: McDavid’s Return Ends in Loss to Golden Knights

By Miguel Mike Medina

Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid returned to the lineup on Wednesday night. However, his return did not have a happy ending. Vegas Golden Knights rallied to beat the Oilers 4-2.

The Oilers have lost two in a row and are still struggling offensively to put in goals on the net.

Noah Hanifin scored twice for the Golden Knights, both in the third period, to tie the game and give the team the lead. One of his two goals came on a power play.

Jack Eichel scored his fifth goal on the season when he put the Golden Knights on the board. Golden Knights goalie Adin Hill made 27 saves.

Brett Kulak and Zach Hyman scored for the Oilers. Hyman has scored three goals in the last four games. In addition to that, he continues to play well against the Golden Knights. Stuart Skinner had 31 saves.

Mattias Ekholm spoke with reporters after the game. He felt frustrated and said the team could’ve done better to produce a different result.

“Very frustrating,” Ekholm said. “We wouldn’t say that we played a very good game, but I thought we played a good team well for 59 minutes. Heartbreaking loss on that side of it. We have to recognize that better in that moment.”

Ekholm understands it’s a long season, and the team can only learn from their mistakes and move on.

“We can’t have someone walk down when we’re on four to two in the d-zone,” said Ekholm. “Plain and simple.”

The Golden Knights had more shots on goal than the Oilers (35 to 29), but the Oilers won 51 percent of their faceoffs.

The Oilers will visit Vancouver on Saturday as they are trying to avoid going on a losing streak.
