Filmmaker Steve McQueen has been getting busy quietly in 2024. He’s a talented filmmaker who takes his time putting out films. He has a great vision of storytelling through the lens. I became a fan of him after watching 12 Years A Slave. It was one of those movies that inspired me to get into acting, but it’s one of those movies I can watch today. It’s way too painful and too many slavery movies have been done already. I got tired of it. But this doesn’t dismiss the brilliant direction and artistry that McQueen brings to the screen. I want him to succeed and continue to succeed.
Back in March, Ireland’s President Michael D. Higgins presented Steve McQueen with the highest honor of the Dublin Film Festival and that is the Volta Award.
Steve is shifting his focus on his latest film and hopefully, it will bring some noise for award season. The name of his latest picture is called Blitz. The movie is about a man named George, defiant and determined to return home to Rita and his grandfather Gerald in East London, who ensues on an adventure, only to find himself in immense peril, while a distraught Rita searches for her missing son.
Blitz will have a world premiere at the London Film
Festival. McQueen serves as the director, producer, and writer for this film.
The film stars Saoirse Ronan and newcomer Elliott Heffernan. Saoirse Ronan is one of the best young actresses in the industry. She’s a future Oscar winner in my opinion. Ronan and McQueen working together seem like a potential director-actor collaboration for many future projects if they like being around each other’s company.
Blitz will premiere in select cinemas on November 1 before streaming globally on Apple TV+ on November 22. The London Film Festival will run from October 9 to October 20.
