Soto’s contract surpasses Shohei Ohtani’s 10-year, $700 million deal and Fernando Tatis’ 14-year, $340 million contract.
The Mets owner, Steve Cohen, has delivered everything he promised. He gave the Mets fans what they dreamed about. The Mets are no longer second fiddle to the Yankees regarding landing marquee-free agents.
It does not guarantee them a championship, but they will be competing. Both New York teams will compete, and Soto’s signing will fuel the rivalry between the Subway series.
It’s a tough pill to swallow for Yankee fans and the organization today. Soto played great last season and was a big reason the Yankees reached the World Series.
Soto finished the 2024 season with a .288 batting average, including 41 home runs, a .419 OBP, and a .569 SLG. He drove in 109 runs.
The Yankees had baseball’s No. 3 offense this year, scoring 815 runs.
Soto is one of the nine players in Major League Baseball history to have 3,500 plate appearances and a 150 OPS+ by age 26.
Soto is also one of the best in the game in terms of plate discipline and patience. He has a good eye and doesn’t swing at everything. Soto barely strikes out.
In six games, the Mets lost in the NLCS to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The team, the Mets, rallied from a 24-35 start to make the playoffs.
Adding Soto to their lineup bolsters their chances of returning to the playoffs. The Mets have won two World Series: 1969 and 1986. They’re hoping to win their first title since 1986.
The Mets haven’t been to the World Series since 2015 when they lost to the Kansas City Royals in five games.
