Rory McIlroy has picked up his second PGA Tour win of the season. On Sunday, McIlroy won The Players Championship.

McIlroy defeated JJ Spaun in a three-hole aggregate playoff Monday on the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass. This is the second time that Rory has won The Players Championship. His previous win was in 2019.

The victory marked his ancillary 28th career PGA Tour win. He’s the fourth golfer to win multiple players and multiple majors. His resilience and ability to overcome challenging, heartbreaking losses are astonishing.

“You have to be willing to get your heart broken,” McIlroy said during an interview with Golf Channel. “I think I went through it for a few years in my career where I wasn’t willing to put myself out there, and I think that’s why I didn’t win as much as I probably could have.”

He was disappointed with some of his putting this weekend and wishes he could’ve gotten it done in regulation on Sunday.

McIlroy knew that the golf course would be windy and just trying to get a feel for the wind. McIlroy remained calm and focused and went on to win the competition.

“It was a bit of a stressful morning,” McIlroy said. “I wish the conditions weren’t as bad as they are, but I handled it very well.”

J.J. Spaun came close to winning the event. He gave a valuable effort. Spaun finished Round One with a 66, 68 in Round Two, 70 in Round Three, and scored a 72 in the Final Round.

McIlroy is one win away from breaking Harry Cooper’s record for winning the most PGA Tour wins by a European player.
