The Cincinnati Reds beat the New York Mets 3-2 on Sunday at Great American Ballpark. Reds took 2 out of 3 in the weekend series.
Reds ace Hunter Greene earned his sixth win of the season. Greene tossed seven strong innings with 12 strikeouts, gave up just one hit and one earned run with two walks. He gave up a home run to Brett Baty in the third inning. Besides that, Greene was dominant. Greene now boasts a 2.59 ERA and 0.93 WHIP.
Brandon Sproat made his big league debut for the Mets. Sprout pitched for six innings, had seven strikeouts, and gave up three earned runs.
Austin Hays tied the game for the Reds in the fourth after a sacrifice fly. However, the Reds’ offense got things going in the bottom of the sixth inning. Shortstop Elly De La Cruz delivered a big RBI triple to bring Noelvi Marte home. Reds grab the lead 2-1.
Hays delivered again in the same inning when he got a hit, which passed by Baty all the way to left field as De La Cruz scored to add the insurance run and made the game 3-1.
Juan Soto connected his 38th home run in the ninth inning. Mets threatened and had men on first and second. Reliever Tony Santillan got Sterling Marte to ground it into a double play to end the game. Santillan earned his fifth save of the season.
It’s a feel-good moment, a feel-good victory for the Reds. The Reds improved to 72-71, still trailing the Mets by four games for the final spot in the wild card race.
The Reds will travel to San Diego to begin a series with the Padres. Nick Lodolo (8-7, 3.22 ERA) will take the mound for the Reds against Yu Darvish (3-5, 5.75 ERA).
