Alice Birch will make her feature directorial debut with ‘Sweetsick’, produced by Searchlight Pictures.
Who will be starting in this new film? Two-time Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett. Birch will be in good company because Blanchett is one of the best actresses of her generation. She has consistently delivered strong performances throughout her career.
Blanchett won an Oscar for her performance in films such as The Aviator and Blue Jasmine. She also did a good job in The Menu.
Birch also wrote the screenplay for Sweetsick. The story is about a woman with a strange and piercing gift – the ability to see what others need, which comes at a tremendous personal cost. Production will begin in the fall, and the setting will be Greece and the United Kingdom.
Birch has written for shows such as Succession, Normal People, and Dead Ringers. The fact that she wrote for Succession and Dead Ringers looks excellent on her resume. Succession is one of the best shows produced by HBO in the last 10 years. They have been nominated and won categories for the Golden Globes and Emmys.
Before film and television, Birch began her writing career while attending Exeter University. Playwright became her main domain, and she learned to write scripts beginning with theater.
Birch co-wrote Die, My Love, a psychological dark comedy drama starring Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson. Lawrence also serves as one of the producers alongside Martin Scorsese.
The movie premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and received a six-minute standing ovation.
Die, My Love will hit theaters in North America on November 7. Sweetsick will be the sixth feature film for which Birch will be the writer.
