The Detroit Red Wings hang on to defeat the Calgary Flames 4-3 on Wednesday night.

Alex DeBrincat scored two goals and had one assist for the Red Wings. Detroit dominated the first two periods of the game. Dylan Larkin scored his 17th goal of the season. Patrick Kane added two assists. Goalie John Gibson made 34 saves.

Calgary scored three goals in the third period by Joel Farabee, Matt Coronato, and Mackenzie Weegar. If there had been an extra period of hockey, the Flames might’ve escaped with a victory.

Red Wings and Flames struggled on power-play possessions. Both teams combined for 0-for-5. Detroit won 52 percent of its face-offs. Flames had more shots on goal.

Forward Andrew Copp addresses the media after the game, saying that although a win is a win, the team still needs to be way better in the game.

“The standard needs to be a lot better,” Copp said. “After the first 10 minutes, we stopped skating. We didn’t have much ozone pressure. We got some rushes and scored, but just our execution coming out of our zone, not good.”

Getting four or more goals increases a team’s chances of winning a hockey game. Red Wings, we’re fortunate to put up enough points to come out victorious. Their defense needs to be more disciplined and remain focused from start to finish.

“I think we can clean up a little bit in our D-zone,” DeBrincat said. “Cut off some things earlier than we were, and I think we’ll spend more time in the ozone if we do that. It’s not easy to win on the road. So we’re doing a good job right now and hope to get another one.”

Red Wings and Flames will meet again on March 16th. The Red Wings will play against Edmonton Oilers tonight at 9pm ET.
