NCAA is planning to expand the 68-team field to 72 or 76 teams. Any expansion would begin, at the earliest, in the 2025-26 season. If the Men’s Tournament expands, then most likely it will apply to the women’s tournament as well. If the men’s event expands, the women’s tournament is likely to go through the same process.
This is not news that will sit well with many college basketball fans. We will see mediocre teams that will play in the tournament. The plan to expand doesn’t make sense but this is nothing new. We saw it happen back in 1975 when the tournament grew from 32 teams to 40 teams by 1979.
What sucks about it is that I wish we can put the Elite Eight, Final Four, and Championship games back on CBS. But since we live in a digital streaming world, then the days of watching March Madness on cable will slowly deteriorate.
