MLB Suspends Orelvis Martinez for 80 Games

by Miguel Mike Medina

Toronto Blue Jays infielder and one of their top prospects from their farm system, Orelvis Martinez has been suspended for 80 games by the MlB for violating MLB’s performance-enhancing drugs. What a disastrous way to start your big-league career. Why would you kickstart your career with this kind of reputation?

The reason I’m coming down hard on this is because as a Dominican descent, I’m tired of seeing Dominican ball players fall into the same trap. Steroids and PEDs should not be labeled on Dominican ball players because the country was born to play baseball and a lot of talent comes out of their country. When I used to write about the Blue Jays, I remember learning about Martinez and the potential he has to become a great player.

Martínez signed with the Jays as an international free agent on July 2, 2018. Nearly six years later, he entered this season being ranked second on MLB’s 2024 Top 30 Blue Jays prospects list. He began the season in Triple-A Buffalo with a 15-game hit streak with the Bisons. The team called him up on June 18th. Five days later, he got suspended. Supposedly, Martinez tried to say that he had taken for fertility issues as he and his girlfriend are trying to have children. Whether this is true or not, he got himself suspended and should’ve known better.
