St Louis Cardinals right fielder Joshua Baez made his MLB debut on Saturday and delivered three home runs against the Chicago Cubs.
Baez, 23, becomes the first player ever to hit three home runs in his first three big league at-bats. Baez is one of the top prospects in the Cardinals farm system. He got called up from Triple-A Memphis. Baez had 30 family members in attendance at Wrigley Field. His performance is one of the best moments of the 2026 season.
Baez did not look nervous. He looked loose and comfortable in the batter’s box. His teammates embraced him and were genuinely proud of him. Baez also received a standing ovation at Wrigley.
When he was called up, he was leading Triple-A with 34 home runs. Baez will get a chance to hit for more on Sunday night as the Cardinals will finish the weekend series against their rivals at 7 pm. The game will be televised on ESPN.
“I tried to stay simple,” Baez said. “He had a good heater, and then he worked his changeup and slider off of it. I was trying to take deep breaths and enjoy the moment. This is insane.”
What we witnessed on Saturday was certainly insane. Those baseball fans who were in attendance will never forget this historic performance. Baez has a good eye to hit the ball. If this is what we are going to get, then he’s going to be in the majors for a long time. We hope he can keep it up and someday go down as a Cardinals legend. What a start for this young man.
Baseball players dream of moments like this. Baez is lucky to start his career playing in a legendary ballpark at Wrigley Field. It’s been a terrific journey for him.
