On Tuesday night, no. 21 Troy Trojans defeated the No. 18 Mississippi State Bulldogs 6-5 in an exciting finish.
Shane Lewis hit a solo home run on a 3-2 pitch to put the Trojans on the board. It was a fastball top of the zone pitch, and he drove it to right field.
Lewis wasn’t finished. He hit his second home run in the top of the fifth inning. Trojans would score four runs in the inning to make it 5-0.
The Bulldogs started a rally when they scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Noah Sullivan hit a grand slam on a 3-1 pitch inside the foul pole to cut the deficit to one. Sullivan hit his first Bulldog home run.
Ace Reese tied the game for the Bulldogs when he hit a single to center field on a 2-1 breaking ball.
The Bulldogs have a golden opportunity in the bottom of the eighth inning. They had bases loaded with one out. Grady Gorgon struck out Sullivan and Hunter Hines to end the inning.
In the top of the ninth inning, on a 3-0 pitch, Trojans centerfielder Steven Meier hit the go-ahead home run to give the team the lead, 6-5. Meier connected his first home run of the season.
Dylan Cup almost hit a game-winning 3-run home run for the Bulldogs, but he missed it by a few inches. The Trojans would hang on to win the game 6-5.
Despite the loss, the Bulldogs recorded a season-high 20 strikeouts against the Trojans. Both teams are playing well this season. Last night, it was a competitive SBC vs. SEC matchup.
Troy improves to 7-1 in the season, while MSU drops to 6-2.
