Cincinnati Reds suffered a heartbreaking loss to the San Francisco Giants after right fielder Mike Yastrzemski hit a game-winning two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning. Reds fall 8-6.
The Reds squandered a five-run lead. The team falls to 5-8. However, they took two out of three from the series.
TJ Friedl hit a standing two-out double to give the Reds a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. He finished the game going 1-for-5. Reds would score five runs in the inning. Elly De La Cruz got a 2-run double. Second baseman Gavin Lux added two RBIs of his own. The Reds rocked Justin Verlander.
In the bottom of the fourth, Jung Hoo Lee tripled on a line drive to right field and brought Willy Adames home.
The Reds would score a run in the 6th inning, but disaster struck when the bottom of the sixth arrived. The Giants rallied and scored four runs in the inning. The Giants took advantage of a wild pitch, double and triple, and singles to cut the lead to one.
The Giants’ lead run producer, Wilmer Flores, tied the game with a home run to left field—all the momentum went to the Giants’ side. The Reds’ confidence was shattered after that comeback.
Reds’ starter Nick Martinez pitched one heck of a game. Although he’s responsible for allowing four earned runs, he had eight strikeouts through five innings. He looked great, especially in the first three innings of the game. Martinez received a no-decision for his start and remains winless.
Emilio Pagan got the loss for the Reds after giving up the two-run home to Yastrzemski.
Game Notes:
- Reds went 4-for-8 in runners in scoring position
- Reds left six men on base
- None of the Reds’ relievers collected a strikeout
The Reds have the day off on Thursday and will begin a weekend home series against NL Central rival Pittsburgh Pirates.
