Broadway musicals bring excitement to theatre consumers. We have seen some of the best musicals of the 2010s.

What makes a musical amazing? What makes a musical play memorable? The cast of characters, the music, lyrics, and sensational production design.

  1. Dear Evan Hansen

When we think about the year 2017, we can’t go without thinking about Dear Evan Hansen. The musical had some of the best songs on the album. The play alone may not have blown people away compared to other Broadway shows. However, this musical was amazing, and Ben Platt led it. He won a Tony for his performance.

Songs like “Anybody Have a Map?” and “Waving Through A Window” are some of the most incredible songs from the album.

  1. Aladdin

The New Amsterdam Theatre will always be the home of “Aladdin.” One of the reasons why Aladdin deserves to be mentioned as one of the best of the decade is because of James Monroe Iglehart.

Iglehart delivered a strong performance playing the character “Genie.” Iglehart played the character from 2013 to 2017. He won a Tony in 2014 for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical. Chad Beguelin, Alan Menken, Howard Ashman, Tim Rice, and Chad Beguelin did a great job individually writing the book, music, and lyrics. They were all nominated for Tonys that same year.

Aladdin is one of Broadway’s highest-grossing productions of all time. Over 21 million people worldwide have seen the show.

  1. The Lion King

The production design, music, and story overall were incredible. Aladdin and The Lion King are two of the most beloved animated films. When it went to Broadway, it was a no-brainer that it was going to succeed.

The acting is also superb in this production. The Lion King is one of those musicals that should be on everyone’s bucket list.

  1. The Book of Mormon

One of the most successful Broadway shows of the decade. If we have to pick one year when this show dominated, it would be 2011.

The Book of Mormon is a five-star caliber musical. People still manage to watch the play.

  1. Hamilton

If Lin-Manuel Miranda touches a project, it is destined to strike gold. If we thought that In the Heights was a one-hit wonder, Miranda backed it up with Hamilton.

The show is very expensive, but the book, music, lyrics, and performance were a grade “A” worthy. Miranda spent seven years working on the play, and everything came out great. Hamilton made its impact starting in 2015 and swept the Tony Awards.

Honorable Mention: Hello, Dolly, The Band’s Visit, Wicked
