The 2026 Tony Awards took place on Sunday night in New York City. Actor John Lithgow becomes the oldest actor to win Lead Actor in a Play for Giant.
Lithgow is one of the greatest actors of his generation. At 80, he’s still amazed the crowd with his craft.
“The other gentlemen in my category, you’re all marvelous actors,” Lithgow said. “I played the lead role in an extraordinary play, Giant. A stunning play made by a bunch of people full of love and kindness, but it’s a play about cruelty in a cruel age.”
Joshua Henry earned a Tony for Lead Actor in a Musical, Ragtime.
“I have to thank God, and an endless creative source for gifts, like Catherine Hannay,” Henry said. “Thank you for dreaming of me when it’s been hard. Thank you for putting our kids to bed. Thank you for your love and your sacrifice.”
When practice and getting back up after falling have been Henry’s motto, he has achieved excellence by performing in this iconic musical. Ragtime won for Best Revival in a Musical. The musical took home four awards.
Singer Pink was the host of the event. She opened the award ceremony with a performance of “Lady Marmalade,” featuring guests such as Megan Thee Stallion.
Death of a Salesman led the night with six wins, including Best Revival of a Play. It’s one of the most iconic plays in theater history. Arthur Miller is a genius for writing such an outstanding play that you can find it not just on Broadway, but it’s also read and performed in various colleges. Theater professors and students use Death of a Salesman as an example of how to tell a good story.
Schmigadoon and The Lost Boys won four Tony Awards. Schmigadoon took the stage to perform, and the production design was creative. Many fans want to see a second season of the Broadway show. Perhaps their wins on Sunday might help change the narrative.
