Alexander ‘Sascha’ Zverev is officially a grand slam winner for the first time in his career. Sascha won 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-7, 6-1 victory over Flavio Cobolli.

The 29-year-old from Germany endured trials and tribulations throughout his career to reach the ultimate prize at Roland Garros. There was no Jannik Sinner. No, Carlos Alcaraz. Zverev needed this one, and he finally did it.

Zverev was overwhelmed with emotion and fell onto his back the moment he realized he had won the match. After the match, Zverev joined the press conference with the 2026 French Open trophy to answer questions. During the fourth set, Zverev was struggling and explained what happened.

“I was cramping,” Zverev said. “I was struggling physically a little bit, even though I don’t think the cramps were physical. I was emotional. I was a bit unstable also in the fourth set, but I actually think that the cramps helped me in a way.”

It’s great to see Zverev play well again. It’s a complete different story from a year ago. Zverev is in his prime, and this is certainly one of the happiest moments of his career. It’s even more meaningful that Zverev becomes the first male tennis player from Germany to win Roland Garros.

“To be honest, I’m a little bit drunk already,” Zverev laughs. “I just repeat myself a little bit more than I’m used to, but I’m just happy to be sitting next to this trophy.”

Many tennis fans, folks in Germany and even journalists are genuinely proud and happy for him. With this Zverev, he should be able to play more freely, with more confidence, and see if he can finally beat the other greats, such as Sinner and Alcaraz. It would be a thrill to see Zverev win more Grand Slams in the future.
