Tampa Bay Rays outlasted the Boston Red Sox to grab Game 1 of the three-game series with a 10-8 win in 11 innings at Fenway Park on Monday night.
Junior Caminero drew a game-winning bases-loaded walk in the 11th inning to put the Rays up 9-8, followed by Jake Mangum’s single on a ground ball to first baseman Romy Gonzalez. Josh Lowe scored on the play to add the insurance run, 10-8.
Junior Caminero leads the Rays with 30 extra base hits (15 doubles and 15 home runs).
Yandy Diaz went 2-for-4 with two runs. Magnum had a great game, going 4-for-6 with 2 RBIs.
Shane Baz was the starter for the Rays. Baz pitched for five innings, allowed three earned runs, three walks, and recorded five strikeouts.
The 26-year-old Ian Seymour got the save for the Rays. Seymour picked up two strikeouts. Seymour made his major league debut. Seymour, No. 19 prospect, got the call on Sunday afternoon after the Rays beat the Miami Marlins.
Seymour played for the Durham Bulls, a Triple-A club. He became the eighth Bulls player to be promoted to the Rays this year and the third to make his debut this season with Tampa Bay.
Monday’s game between the Rays and the Red Sox focused on players making professional debuts. The Red Sox also had a prospect who got the call.
Red Sox No. 1 prospect Roman Anthony made his MLB debut. Anthony finished his first game going 0-for-4 with an RBI.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora got ejected at the bottom of the 11th inning for arguing about balls and strikes.
The Rays went 6-for-15 on runners in scoring position and left 11 men on base.
Rays improve to 36-30. Ryan Pepiot will take the mound for the Rays against Lucas Giolito. Pepiot is seeking to earn his fourth win of the season.
