Austin Hays hits a crucial two-run home run to help the Cincinnati Reds beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-4 on Sunday afternoon.
One of the best things the Reds front office did was to add Austin Hays to the lineup. He’s been terrific for the Reds. Jays had a good day, going 2-for-4. Matt McClain also had a good game with a solo home run. He’s been on a mission lately.
The Reds’ bullpen did a good job to seal the deal, especially their closer Emilio Pagan, who recorded the final three strikeouts to end the game.
Reds starter Brady Singer had a solid outing. He pitched for six innings, striking out 8 Cardinals and giving up three earned runs. He gave up two runs in the first inning, but then he let the game come to him and started to settle down.
We can’t forget what TJ Friedl performed in this game. Without Friedl, there would be no rally. He finished the game going 3-for-5, delivering three hits with two RBIs.
The Reds improve to 69-68. It was a must-win game for the Reds as they snapped a five-game losing streak. The task doesn’t get easier. Although they will remain at home, their opponent is the red-hot Toronto Blue Jays.
Blue Hays and Reds will begin their three-game series on Monday, Labor Day. The first pitch will be at 1:10 p.m. Hunter Greene will take the ball and face Chris Bassitt.
