Noelvi Marte plays the hero in the Cincinnati Reds’ comeback win against the Toronto Blue Jays on Labor Day. The Reds scored three runs in the ninth to win 5-4.
Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette had the hot bat, going 4-4 with two doubles and two RBIs. Bichette hit the go-ahead two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning. After him, Daulton Varsho hit a solo homer to add to the lead 4-2.
Ke’Bryan Hayes, TJ Friedl, and Matt McClain all got on base in the bottom of the ninth inning to get the rally started. Friedl’s ground-rule double cut the deficit to one. When Marte came to the plate, he singled on a ground ball to left field to bring McLain and Friedl home.
Reds starter Hunter Greene had another solid outing on the mound. He tossed six innings with seven strikeouts and gave up five hits and one earned run. He got a no-decision. Yosver Zulueta earned the win for the Reds.
Sal Stewart made his Major League debut. He was placed No. 6 in the lineup and got the start at first base. Stewart collected his first big league hit in the second inning. His family was in attendance and was visibly emotional.
Stewart showed a lot of passion and emotion during yesterday’s game, especially when he scored a run. The Reds might have something special with Stewart being part of their organization. After the game, Stewart demonstrated class and humility by taking the time to sign autographs before leaving the ballpark. It was posted on social media.
Left-hander Nick Lodolo will face Jose Berrios on Tuesday night. Lodolo is looking to redeem himself after a tough outing against the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he gave up five hits and four earned runs with six strikeouts in four innings of work. He’s looking to earn his ninth win of the season.
