Canelo Alvarez will face Terence Crawford in perhaps the biggest fight of the year. The fight will take place on Saturday, September 13, and will stream on Netflix. Both men are in their mid-30s but have a lot left in the tank.
Sports journalist Max Kellerman made an interesting comparison between Canelo Alvarez and the late Marvelous Marvin Hagler. Kellerman interviewed Alvarez and told him that he reminded him of Hagler because of their versatility.
Hagler had a strong chin, could chase you around the ring, and was an effective counterpuncher. Canelo brings those same tools to the ring, but he doesn’t chase every opponent or depend on who he is facing in the ring.
When Hagler fought Tommy Hearns in 1985, they had a war, especially in the first round. Hagler chased Hearns and won the fight in a knockout. Crawford is lightweight like Roberto Duran, and Hagler didn’t chase Duran in the ring. Hagler won the fight, but he could’ve been much better had he used some of those adjustments.
“I can do a lot of things in the ring. Alvarez said. “If I need it, I can do many things, and I need to go and do my thing. I need to be intelligent, patient, and put everything I’ve got.”
We could be seeing a different version of Canelo than we have before. Canelo will need to bring his size and power to take down Crawford because he’s a very good fighter, and it won’t be easy. Canelo will get all his tools and develop a good game plan for his team.
Crawford is a different kind of fighter and has a lot of pride. Crawford will also come with a plan to put up a good fight. The fans have high expectations for this fight to be very impressive. Both fighters know that they must put on a show for the audience.
The stakes are high for both fighters in this bout. Hopefully, there are no excuses or asterisks when it’s all said and done.
