Mortal Kombat 2 hits theaters this weekend. The new movie made $5.2 million in previews.

The sequel has the potential to gross at least $50 million, maybe as much as $70 million, at the box office by the end of the weekend.

Johnny Cage is one of the best characters in video game history. Folks from the 80s and 90s won’t forget playing Mortal Kombat on the Sega Genesis or Super Nintendo. Mortal Kombat has a big fan base. It wouldn’t be a surprise if they come out as winners for this weekend’s box office results.

In the second movie, we will see Johnny Cage added. Karl Urban will portray the character. After seven successful years on the Amazon Prime series The Boys, Urban is looking to replicate that success with Mortal Kombat 2. It’s his second film of the year. ‘The Bluff’ came out in February of this year. Urban is also working on an upcoming New Zealand-Canadian live-action animated film, I Object, which is currently in post-production.

The best part of the Mortal Kombat video games/movies is the tournament. The term “tournament” brings excitement for people who love competition. In the sequel, there’s going to be a tournament, and someone is going to challenge Shao Khan, played by Martyn Ford.

The first Mortal Kombat came out in 2021 and grossed $84.4 million at the box office on a $55 million budget. Fans won’t forget the original film, released in 1995. The cast from the 1995 film was fantastic. The script wasn’t great, but the fighting scenes and the performance are what make the movie still worth watching for Mortal Kombat fans.

Jeremy Slater is the writer for the sequel. Simon McQuoid returns to direct the sequel. The prequel was his directorial debut.
