Sports Throwback Thursday: 2001 Royal Rumble

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the 2001 Royal Rumble event. It’s one of the most memorable Royal Rumbles in the history of the WWE.

Kane eliminated 11 wrestlers in the main event. He was the runner-up after being eliminated by Stone Cold Steve Austin. Austin winning the match was great because it led him to challenge The Rock for the WWF Championship for the second time at Wrestlemania. Before the Royal Rumble match, Austin made his presence in another match.

Austin interfered in a match between Kurt Angle, and Triple H. Kurt was the WWF champion. Kurt got some help from the rattlesnake when he delivered a Stone Cold Stunner on Triple H. It was the ultimate payback because Triple H cost Austin the title weeks earlier on Raw is War. Angle defended his title but eventually lost his belt a month later at No Way Out against The Rock.

Comedian Drew Carey made a special appearance at the Royal Rumble. It’s the Attitude Era. You just had to tune in every week and every pay per view event.
