Surprising Golden Globe Nominations in 2023

By Miguel Mike Medina

The Golden Globe nominees were announced on Monday. As usual, award ceremonies don’t always get it right in terms of who they choose to nominate and who they choose to snub. In this year’s nominations, many of the nominees were surprising, and some were too good to be true. In this woke culture that we live in, you can expect voters to favor the woke mob/leftist. From a TV standpoint, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association got it right. From a film standpoint, it was slightly different.

“Only Murders in the Building” getting nominated for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy is a terrific selection. The show stars Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. The impeccable writing, performance, and set design.

“Ozark” got a well-deserved nomination for Best Television Series – Drama. The series ended this year in four seasons. It’s one of the best drama shows of the year and is on Netflix. If you haven’t seen it, you have to. It’s one of the best all-around TV series with great acting, directing, writing, and production design. Let’s see if Ozark can get the last hurrah.

Quinta Brunson and the Abbott Elemntrafy family continue to have a great year. After winning an Emmy for her writing, Brunson is nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy. Brunson is red hot with this show and also making commercials. She has a lot of momentum going her way.

I’m a fan of Viola Davis. She’s one of my favorite current actresses in the game. Davis got nominated for her performance in “The Woman King.” I believe this nomination had to do more with politics than anything else. Therefore, I wasn’t surprised by the nomination. “Top Gun: Maverick” getting nominated caught me by surprise. I did not see that one coming. “The Fabelmans” is one of the year’s most exciting films, and it’s worthy of several nominations.

I don’t know how I feel about Avatar 2 getting nominated for Best Drama. The first one didn’t blow me away. So I’m not expecting anything better in the second one. I’m a fan of James Cameron, but Avatar doesn’t do it for me. “Elvis” is one of my favorite films of the year. The film has so many things elements and more positives than negatives. I wouldn’t put the movie in the “Best Drama” category. I would’ve placed the film in the “Musical or Comedy” section.

“The Banshees of Inisherin”: eight nominations

“Everything Everywhere All at Once”: six nominations.

“The Fabelmans,” “Babylon,” and “Elvis”: five nominations

The Golden Globes will return to NBC on Jan. 10.
