The Two Artists that Worked with Sergio Vargas in 1992

by Miguel Mike Medina

Sergio Vargas, a standout among the best Merengue artists of his generation, is celebrated for his exceptional voice and remarkable songwriting skills. His career is studded with numerous chart-topping hits. In 1992, at the pinnacle of his career, he joined forces with two other Dominican artists, resulting in the creation of some truly fantastic songs that, to this day, remain somewhat underappreciated.

Who were those two artists that made this magic with Sergio Vargas?

The two names that worked with Sergio Vargas in that particular year were Johnny Ventura and Jose Alberto El Canario.

Vargas and Ventura collaborated on a song called Ama y Comprende; it means “love and understand ” in English. You can hear the song on YouTube. There was a show in the 90s, and people from New York will remember the show. It was called Sabado Al Mediodia (Saturday at noon), but the show would premiere at 11 am EST on Channel 41 on Univision. Vargas and Ventura performed this song on the show for the first time. It’s a fantastic production, a great duo between two Dominican legends, and a song that will make anyone dance.

Vargas and Alberto made magic with the song Torero, which in English is called “Bullfighter.” It was an outstanding production, with great chemistry between both men, and they also performed this song in Sabado Al Mediodia. Without Vargas’ voice, the music would’ve not been as great as it was. The song’s chorus is phenomenal because of the great work of the band.

Torero and Ama y Comprende are two fantastic songs that don’t get enough recognition. All three artists have bigger hits in their careers, and these songs get overlooked. The blessing of YouTube is that people can always go there and listen to music. Discovering songs under the radar is essential because they have a lot of meaning, with beautiful lyrics and good, clean themes.
