Dominican music artist Alex Bueno passed away at the age of 62 on Thursday after battling brain cancer.
Bueno is one of the most complete artists from the Dominican Republic. Although he is best known for signing and delivering Merengue songs, he has also made the transition to Bachata, Salsa, and Bolero (Ballad in English)—a versatile artist with an impeccable voice.
His music has been heard in the streets of Latin America and even in New York, which has the largest Dominican population, since the 1980s. Bueno got to work with another Dominican legend, Fernando Villalona, who had a major influence on his musical career. Bueno learned a lot from him and became a better artist under Villalona’s leadership.
Bueno, did battle with some demons, which is no surprise to those who have followed his life and career. What’s remarkable about Bueno is how he has overcome tough moments in his life and how he can get back to making great music. Young artists should look to Bueno as an example of not pursuing things that will harm their lives and careers. Bueno’s career is a testament to the fact that anything is possible when you surround yourself with great role models and genuine people.
His death is a major loss for the music industry in the Dominican Republic. Bueno had many outstanding hits, such as Amor Divino, Colegiala, Que Vuelva, Me Muero Por Ella, El Jardin Prohibido, and Ese Hombre Soy Yo. The list goes on and on.
When an artist dies, radio and television platforms post interviews and play their songs. In the Dominican Republic and New York, there will be many Alex Bueno songs played in honor of his memory. It’s sad that his mother, who is still alive, will have to bury his son. No parent should have to bury their kid. May God rest his soul.
