The Florida Panthers won the Stanley Cup Finals rematch battle with a 6-5 victory against the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place on Monday.
The game streamed on Amazon Prime. It was a sloppy game, but it provided some entertainment because of a short fight in the second period.
Aside from the fighting, both teams made many mistakes, but the Panthers had the edge.
Carter Verhaeghe scored the tiebreaking goal in the third period. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 25 shots.
Matthew Tkachuk scored at the end of the first period with a power play goal.
Zach Hyman tied the game not once but twice in this game in the first and second periods. Hyman’s goal in the second period was his 200th career goal.
Connor Brown scored the game’s third goal to give the Oilers the lead in the second period.
Leon Draisaitl scored a power-play goal on a quick release, beating Sergei on a sharp angle.
Draisaitl has 17 multi-point games this season and leads the league in goals (23).
The Oilers had a two-goal lead over the Panthers, but the Panthers scored three unanswered goals from the end of the second period and throughout the third period.
Coach Kris Knoblauch spoke with the media after the game to discuss the Oilers’ surrender of six goals to the Panthers.
“Sometimes when you get really good goaltending, you rely on that, and your details aren’t that good defensively,” Knoblauch said.
The Oilers lost a heartbreaking game. Although the second period was their best, they couldn’t prevent the Panthers from scoring, and the defense didn’t stop in the third period.
The Oilers drops to 8-2-0 in their last ten games. The next match will be against the Boston Bruins on Thursday.
