Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Carson Beck announced on Saturday (December 28) that he is declaring for the 2025 NFL Draft.
Coming into the 2024 season, many were expecting Beck to be one of the strongest quarterbacks in College Football and should make a challenge for both the Heisman Trophy and to be the number one pick of the 2025 Draft. However, he could not live up to this high expectations, and at times struggled in the quarterback position, with ball security being a massive issue for him.
During the regular season, Beck threw for 3,485 yards and 28 touchdowns. This is slightly down from his 2023 numbers. However, the security issues are only emphasized when the number of interceptions and fumbles are looked at. The number of interceptions doubled from 6 to 12, (with Beck having numerous games with three interceptions), while he recorded seven fumbles this year, three of them resulting in a loss of possession.
Despite a decrease in performance, Beck took the Bulldogs to the SEC Championship game, where they faced the Texas Longhorns. The Bulldogs won this game in overtime, earning them a spot (and a first-round bye) in the College Football Playoff. But Beck injured his elbow in the first half, ruling him out of the rest of the game and the playoffs, with Gunner Stockton, who has never started a game at the collegiate level taking his place for the most important games of the season.
In a normal quarterback class, Beck’s 2024 would not help him. He would likely be seen as a late pick, potentially a 3rd round pick if a team was desperate. But the quarterback class for the 2025 NFL Draft is not the best, especially when compared to previous years. This class is led by Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward, but Beck is not far behind them. ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr ranks him at the moment as the fourth-best quarterback in the class.
However, in a year where only a few NFL teams will need to draft a quarterback, Beck’s season and not playing in the playoffs, where the eyes of the College Football world would be on him, will not help him stand out.
This could mean that it may be a while before we see Carson Beck on an NFL field.
