Rory Mcllroy (-11) wins the 2025 Masters Tournament at Augusta after defeating Justin Rose in the playoff (first career major playoff). McIlroy finished with a 1-over 73 before it went to the playoff.
A Sunday we will never forget. It was one of the most fantastic finishes in the history of the Masters Tournament. It’s Mcllroy’s 17th career Masters start, 29th career PGA Tour win, and third win of the season.
Rory’s reaction was truly authentic, and it gives you goosebumps. It’s been years in the making, years of frustration and disappointment. It all paid off after this major accomplishment.
“It’s a dream come true,” Mcllroy said in the press conference. “I’ve dreamt about that moment for as long as I can remember. I mentioned it in the prize ceremony, but watching Tiger here in 1997 do what he did and winning his first green jacket inspired many of my generation to emulate him. At some point in my career, I didn’t know if I would have this nice garment over my shoulders.”
Mcllroy admitted that he was nervous and that it was one of the toughest days in his career on the golf course. Rory got the job done, and his experience led him to see the glory.
“I’ve carried that burden since 2014,” Mcllroy said. “It’s been 11 years. I’m not just about winning the next major but the career grand slam, you know, trying to join a group of five players to do it, you know, watching a lot of my peers get green jackets in the process win. Yeah, it’s been difficult, and I’ve tried to approach this tournament with the most positive attitude every time I’ve shown up. I think I just got the cumulative experience I’ve gained coming back here every year, and I feel like I get a little more comfortable with the shots needed.”
Bryson DeChambeau didn’t perform his best on the final day of the round. He finished the day with seven under 75. DeChambeau shared his thoughts on the iron play feel of the range.
“It wasn’t a tight or dialed-in,” DeChambeau said after the tournament. “Kept hitting the heel. Something I’ve been working on with LIV Golf. We got some irons, which helps dramatically, but we haven’t got the front edge just yet.”
Bryson also expressed that he needs to work on his side slopes. He felt uncomfortable on the golf course with the side slopes. He knows he has much to improve, and there’s more room for improvement. Bryson was visibly upset and disappointed that he didn’t win the Masters.
Mcllroy becomes the sixth golfer to complete the grand slam. He joins the elite group of Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods. No one has won the grand slam since Woods in 2000. The 25-year wait is over. Rory finally got the monkey off his back.
