Eric Dane, best known for playing Dr. Mark Sloan in Grey’s Anatomy, revealed that he’s been diagnosed with ALS.
Dane has one functioning arm due to the disease.
“I started experiencing some weakness in my right hand,” Dane said. “I didn’t think anything of it. At the time, I thought I’d been texting too much or my hand was fatigued. But a few weeks later, I noticed it got a little worse. So I saw a hand specialist, who sent me to another hand specialist. I went to the neurologist. The neurologist sent me to another neurologist and said, ‘This is way above my pay grade.’
The 52-year-old actor’s situation became a harsh reality because after nine months, Dane was told that he had the incurable disease of ALS. The disease affects the arms, legs, speech, breathing, etc.
Dane was part of Grey’s Anatomy for six seasons. He’s appeared in 139 episodes. Dane also has TV credits for shows such as TNT’s The Last Ship, where he portrayed Commander and Captain Tom Chandler, appearing for 56 episodes. He played Cal Jacobs for 13 episodes in the hit show Euphoria.
Dane’s last work is the Amazon Prime series Countdown, a crime drama in which he plays Nathan Blythe.
It’s sad what is happening to Dane. It’s a shame that to this day, we have to call ALS an “incurable” disease. There needs to be a cure for this, especially when we live in a time when science and technology are highly advanced.
Dane is not fighting this disease alone as he has the support and love from his wife and kids.
