Baby Boom is one of the best-written films of 1987 and arguably one of the most important films of the 1980s. Diane Keaton gives one of the best performances of her career.
Keaton portrays a character named J.C. Waitt, a very career-oriented and career-driven businessman. Her work is her life, and she wants nothing to get in the way. She lives and works in Manhattan, New York. Her whole life changed when she began to take care of her long-lost cousin’s baby daughter, who died.
The baby is only fourteen months old. J.C. is initially reluctant because she is not ready for this unexpected turn of events in her life. She is already in a relationship with her husband, played by Harold Ramis, and feels she cannot handle raising and caring for a baby.
Throughout the movie, you see J.C.’s character and mentality transition when the baby comes into her life. She goes from interviewing and hiring a nanny to look after the baby to feeling guilty and decides to look after the baby herself, taking her everywhere, including her job.
J.C. is an investment broker, and her job demands a lot of business meetings, traveling, and much more. But J.C. is tenacious, and she has learned that work is not everything in life. There are more important and valuable things in life that will bring her peace and happiness.
J.C. became a better person when she put the baby first before her work. This movie teaches you to be mature and responsible and to accept the blessings that God is giving you.
Baby Boom made 26 million at the box office on a 15 million budget. Baby Boom received two Golden Globe nominations: Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical and Best Motion Picture in a Comedy or Musical.
