Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was overwhelmed with emotions after a 15-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival following the premiere of A24’s The Smashing Machine.
Johnson and Emily Blunt reunited for the movie, which could be a possible Oscar contender. Benny Safdie is the director and writer of the movie. Critics have highly praised the film and feel that Johnson’s performance was outstanding.
The 53-year-old has been waiting for moments like this. Are we finally going to see Johnson in Oscar conversation this year?
It’s still early to tell if the movie will be nominated for Best Picture and if Johnson will receive a Best Actor nomination. The film has received some comparisons because of Johnson’s performance, such as Mickey Rourke in The Wrestler and Robert De Niro in Raging Bull.
Johnson plays the role of Mark Kerr. He’s a wrestler who transitions into an MMA fighter, overcoming many obstacles to find triumph. Blunt plays the role of Kerr’s girlfriend in the movie, Dawn Staples.
Blunt is a terrific actress. Therefore, her performance is a must-see alongside Johnson. Johnson and Blunt have shown great on-screen chemistry after working together in Disney’s Jungle Cruise.
The Smashing Machine will hit the theaters Oct. 3.
