Detroit Red Wings captain forward Dylan Larkin hits the game-winning goal in overtime as the Red Wings beat the Dallas Stars, 4-3, at Little Caesars Arena on Tuesday.
James van Riemsdyk scored the first goal for Detroit.
“Finding that consistency, shift to shift and sticking with the game plan, playing with each other and playing for each other,” Rismsdyk said. “Some good teams we played against, and we’ve done our job and done it well.”
Goaltender John Gibson made 19 saves to extend his winning streak to a career-best eight games. Emmitt Finnie scored his ninth goal of the season in the third quarter. His goal was vital because he tied the game at 2-2.
Before the third period, the Dallas Stars scored two goals in the second period by Roope Hintz and Jamie Benn. The Stars regained the lead in the third period after Wyatt Johnson scored a goal.
And then, the Larkin effect struck at the right time. Larkin tied the game at 3-3 at the 4:03 mark, and it came during a power-play possession. The crowd erupted when he scored, and they went even crazier when he became the hero in overtime.
“We were really mature in the third period,” Larkin said. “Another night where we’ve been challenged, where Todd brought up to us our record last year, going into breaks, and the first game out of breaks. So it’s the first challenge this year, and I thought we passed with our intensity and our legs and how we stuck together.”
Larkin continues to put up significant numbers. He recorded his fifth consecutive 20-goal season and became only the third Red Wings player in the past 20 years to accomplish the feat. That’s the captain right there. He’s going to wear that red and white jersey for a long time as long as he stays healthy and continues to produce.
The Red Wings will be on the road to face the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday, Dec 27th at 7 pm ET.
