It’s Easter Sunday! The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has delivered big box-office numbers this weekend. It’s just what we expected.
The movie premieres in theaters on April 1. It’s the year’s biggest debut, grossing $190.1 million in theaters across the U.S. and over $370 million worldwide. It’s the most numbers in an opening weekend since James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash.
It’s been a great year at the box office for movies like Project Hail Mary, and Pixar’s Hoppers. Project Hail Mary and Hoppers release in March.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is based on the 2007 video game. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic are the co-directors of the film. Matthew Fogel wrote the script. Shigeru Miyamoto, who is a video game designer, returned to work on the project.
Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, and Keegan-Michael Key all returned to do the voice-overs of characters Mario, Peach, Luigi, Bowser, and Toad. That’s the Core Four of the Mario games. For the sequel, there were new additions to the cast, such as Golden Globe Award winner Donald Glover, who did the voice of Yoshi, Glen Powell, Luis Guzmán, Issa Rae, Brie Larson, and Kevin Michael Richardson.
The film screened in 4,252 theaters, including 421 IMAX and 1,345 premium large format screens. Mexico leads with $29.1 million from 5,136 screens across all international countries.
In 2023, The Super Mario Bros. Movie made over $1.3 billion at the box office. The numbers are not surprising, as Mario games have been famous and beloved for many years and generations. Many fans watching the movies feel nostalgic about childhood memories of playing the game on the Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, and many other PlayStation consoles.
