The New York Mets celebrate the 40th anniversary of the 1986 World Series championship team on Saturday at Citi Field.
Mookie Wilson, Darryl Strawberry, Keith Hernandez, Jesse Orosco, and many more players from the team were in attendance. A group of different and wild personalities, but they came together and got the job done. The 86 team brought a lot of joy to the city and to their fanbase.
During the press conference, some of the players shared their thoughts and reminisced about the 86 team. There were many stories and behind-the-scenes moments about that team. The 86 Mets team had some clutch hitting and pitching that helped them win the World Series over the Boston Red Sox.
“We found a way to win,” Wilson said. “I think that’s the common thread right here.”
Wilson hit the ground ball to first base that went past Bill Buckner’s legs, allowing the game-winning run to score home to win Game 6 and force a Game 7. Wilson is a fan favorite because of his toughness and is always willing to hustle. He also served as the Mets first base coach from 1996 to 2002.
Mets closer of that year, Jesse Orosco, looks great for his age. He’s another fan favorite, and the lefty is known for getting the last strikeout of Game 7 of the series. He threw his glove in the air before getting mobbed by his teammates on the field. The Mets fans will never forget that image, especially those who were in attendance that night.
“We just wanted to have fun,” Orosco said. “We were able to get our work in and all that stuff. Those are good memories, and I love hearing about that.”
Davey Johnson, who was the manager of the Mets team, is no longer with us. He was instrumental in bringing the team to play as a family.
