What a night for the Lombard family. The New York Yankees promoted George Lombard Jr and made his big-league debut. Jacob Lombard made his pro debut in the Miami Marlins minor league.
What else happened on Tuesday night? The Lombard brothers hit home runs on the same night. Lombard’s parents were in the Bronx to witness Lombard Jr hit a home run and make a solid defensive play at shortstop. With Lombard’s mother checking her phone, they got the news that Jacob hit a home run in Low-A Jupiter.
It’s a joy to watch a baseball family share success. Their father played in the big leagues in the 1990s with the Atlanta Braves, and now he sees his sons live the dream and follow the tradition.
Lombard Jr was the No. 26 pick in the 2023 MLB Draft. The 21-year-old has been putting on a show this season before getting called up to the show. Lombard Jr. is hitting .312 with 12 extra-base hits at the Double-A level. When he got promoted to Triple-A, Lombard Jr batted .258 with 23 extra-base hits and a .405 OBP.
Lombard Jr did not look nervous. There were thousands of fans in attendance. Perhaps coming from a baseball background and the values his parents put in his mind helped him to play with a lot of faith and confidence.
After the game, Lombard Jr. commented about what this moment means for him and his family to learn that his brother also did well on Tuesday night.
“It’s really awesome for my parents,” Lombard Jr said. “I bet they were watching the game on the phone. I was really excited for him too.”
Jacob also did an interview to discuss the historic night.
“It’s hard to put in words,” Jacob said. “I’m jaw-dropped. I don’t even know how that’s possible, but it’s pretty cool that it was able to happen.”
