NASA has just increased the chance of an asteroid wiping out an entire city in December 2032 by 3.1 percent.
The news could make anyone panic, but everyone can’t start panicking. We must pay attention to the asteroid risk, as there could be a chance that everything will be fine.
According to NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies website, the odds are slowly increasing, and the estimated diameter is around 177 feet (54 meters). The asteroid could miss targeting the Earth, and the percentage of that happening could be about 95 or 96 percent.
Nasa has successfully tested technologies to deflect asteroids. In 2027, there will be a test about the asteroid-redirection, which China will do. Other space agencies are also working on contingency measures for the asteroid.
NASA is also training the biggest telescope ever made on the asteroid better to understand its trajectory, size, and composition.
We are seven years away from this potential asteroid. It’s somewhere between 130 to 300 feet long. Some possible impact locations are close to large cities like Bogota, Lagos, and Mumbai.
It’s a warning sent by NASA, but we must keep things positive and our eyes open.
